Dealing with the emotional impact of bad runs in poker
Have you ever run bad in poker? Have you ever run bad for an extended period of time? Has that run bad ever made you irrate? If you answered yes to any of those questions, welcome to the The club of poker players who have experienced a bad run of cards.
But the club you really want to be a part of is the club of players that have run bad AND survived to play another day. Running bad can take many forms. You can constantly get your money in with a two pair against a flush draw and lose. You can constantly run your KK into AA.
The thing you have to remember is that this is what you signed up for! Most hands always have a chance of winning, even if they seem remote at first glance. The only things you control as a poker player are your lines and your reactions. Hopefully your lines create lots of spots where you get money in with an edge.
And hopefully your reactions are neutral-at-worst on the times your opponent sucks out on you with their nugget of equity. With all of that being said, how do we deal with running badly? Running Good or Bad? I was reading another thread and a question caught my attention. Going to see if I'm still running good I'm just curious but do you really believe that 'see if I'm still running good' I play based on how I'm feeling. If I'm feeling good, positive, enthused, well-rested, motivated and want to make the huge time commitment a tournament requires Even better if I'm 'excited' about playing Running good is just a fortunate thing that may or may not happen.
We have terms like "heater" and "Cooler" and these refer, in general, to that sort of a concept, i believe. If he's running a heater he's on a run if he runs into a hand that stops his run he has run into a Cooler. At least that's how I've always interpreted those two words. Yes, I DO happen to believe in runs of luck or maybe you could call it the RNG hitting a rut for a few hands, call it what you like.
It still seems to have the appearance of actually happening. Thanks kingblacksledge for repeating the tread I posted. I hear it all the time about players having a bad or good run of cards.
Like when you are playing a tourny and every hand for 30 mins is crap and then you start getting good winning hands. Well can't that also be true from one day to the next? I sure believe it can. I for one have been on bad runs for a week or more, and I have lost a lot. But now days I feel like I know if I'm on a bad run or a good one. I really don't know how to explain it. Maybe we can get a few more opinions here. Maybe its just me but I have noticed on some days I will register for a tourney and boom I hit three or four hands in a row that hold up.
I build a super stack in the first few mins then poof I get a setup hand that if I can min the damage I will go like a couple of orbits then boom another three or four hands wins, Its a weird pattern going on at carbon lately.
