This page describes the ranking of poker hands. This applies not only in the game of poker itself, but also in certain other card games such as Chinese Poker , Chicago , Poker Menteur and Pai Gow Poker. There are 52 cards in the pack, and the ranking of the individual cards, from high to low, is ace, king, queen, jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
In standard poker - that is to say in the formal casino and tournament game played internationally and the home game as normally played in North America - there is no ranking between the suits for the purpose of comparing hands - so for example the king of hearts and the king of spades are equal. Note however that suit ranking is sometimes used for other purposes such as allocating seats, deciding who bets first, and allocating the odd chip when splitting a pot that can't be equally divided.
See ranking of suits for details. A poker hand consists of five cards. The categories of hand, from highest to lowest, are listed below. Any hand in a higher category beats any hand in a lower category so for example any three of a kind beats any two pairs. Between hands in the same category the rank of the individual cards decides which is better, as described in more detail below.
In games where a player has more than five cards and selects five to form a poker hand, the remaining cards do not play any part in the ranking. Poker ranks are always based on five cards only, and if these cards are equal the hands are equal, irrespective of the ranks of any unused cards.

Because if you draw 5 cards randomly, you are more likely to get 5 cards in sequential than 5 cards all of the same suit. We can think about this logically. I think you can just multiply these numbers together. Even if that's not how you solve it, it's apparent that there are many more outs to hit the next needed card for a straight then there are for a flush.
I did the calculations and multiplying the numbers amount to very close approximations of the actual probabilities. As others have said, it is because you are more likely to make a straight than a flush. In general, poker hands are ranked from most common hands being the weakest to most rare hands being the strongest.
This assumes 5 card poker hands and nothing wild. Just you have more possible 5 card hands to consider when you get 7 cards than when you get only exactly 5 I. So a different way of counting this is to just count the number of straights versus the number of flushes, not caring about the denominator of the number of possible hands. For flushes there are 4 suits which can be the flush, and each suit has 13 cards, and you need 5 of them.
For each of the 5 cards in the straight there are 4 different suits possible. For the straight flushes we need every card of the straight to be the same, so for each of the 10 different straights, there is 1 straight flush for each suit, so that makes 40 straight flushes. So clearly straight flushes are much more rare than normal flushes or normal straights. And again the more common a hand is, the weaker it is. Also, if you need a way to remember it because a lot of people have trouble with this, for some reason you can remember that if you start with the weakest hands and end with the strongest hands the strongest hand is a straight flush not a flush straight.
So straight comes before flush in straight flush, so straight is weaker and comes before flush in the hand orderings. You can also easily see why a full house will beat both a straight or a flush but not a straight flush because for a full house there are 13 ranks for the A-A-A, each of which gets 12 ranks for the B-B. For the A-A-A there are 4 possible suit combination each one leaves out one suit , for the B-B there are 6 possible suit combinations 4C2.
